Rotator Cuff Injuries

The tendons that connect your shoulder muscles and bones do a great deal of work every day. When a shoulder injury leaves these tendons over-exerted, a painful rotator cuff tear can occur. These rotator cuff injuries are one of the most common underlying causes of shoulder pain. A rotator cuff injury can occur not only due to intense physical activity like contact sports but also due to a simple overextension while reaching for something. At Divergent Health in Calgary, we have years of experience diagnosing and treating rotator cuff injuries.

Causes

A rotator cuff tear occurs when pressure from the shoulder blade pinches off the tendon as the arm is lifted, extended, or pulled. This pressure can be the result of frequent stress on the tendon, like repeatedly lifting heavy objects, or it may be separated in a traumatic event like a car accident. A partial tear will lead to pain and limited mobility, while a severe tear can make moving your arm impossible.

Symptoms

Pain during movement is the most common symptom of a rotator cuff injury. A patient may feel their arm is too weak to lift or extend with its usual power, and may even feel a crackling sensation as they adjust their range of motion. Stiffness and swelling are common, further restricting your range of motion. Tenderness may remain long after the injury has occurred and partially healed.

Diagnosis

Our Divergent Healthcare team will diagnose a rotator cuff through an examination using x-rays and imaging techniques. An MRI can help to identify the breaking point in the shoulder’s tendons, making it possible to determine the exact point and depth of damage to the tendon and the shoulder.

Treatment

A minor rotator cuff may heal on its own with rest and a shoulder sling. After a few weeks, if the tendon has completely healed, a series of movement exercises will help restore your range of motion. Physical therapy may take as little as a few sessions, or it may require several weeks before a patient feels comfortable with everyday routines. When you first visit our clinic for a rotator cuff injury, we will examine your musculoskeletal system to develop an injury care plan tailored to your needs.
